When The Going Gets Tough...

The Dakar Rally 2017

The Dakar Rally left its ancestral home in Africa several years ago to head for the incredible landscapes of South America. It's proved a huge hit both with people in South America and the international TV audience, who get to tune in and enjoy some of the world's best scenery.

In 2017, the big news is that Paraguay joins the Dakar club for the first time, with the race start line in the capital, Asuncion. We've been huge fans of Paraguay for a long time, so it's great to see the Dakar Rally starting here, although it is only a fairly brief appearance before the competitors head west into Argentina.

Dakar Rally 2017 route

Here, the drivers will cross northern Argentina via Resistencia and Tucuman, before heading (literally!) up into Bolivia. The first stop here will be lovely Tupiza, before we reach the highlands around La Paz. From here it's back south again through the fabulous landscapes of the Salar de Uyuni and back into Argentina.

The first stop back in Argentina is one of our favourite cities in the whole of South America, Salta. This colonial jewel in Argentina's crown is surprisingly little-visited but hopefully a little publicity from the 2017 Dakar Rally will help to change that!

From Salta, the course then heads south and then east across the Pampas to its final stop in fabulous Buenos Aires.

2017 Dakar Rally Holiday Packages

As usual, we will be offering special holiday packages to see this year's Dakar Rally, so please get in touch to ask about those. However, if you'd like to just include a day enjoying the action as part of a wider holiday in South America, have a look at our Salt Lake Express itinerary for a holiday including the Uyuni Salt Flats, or our Gaucho Grande holiday in Argentina to see Buenos Aires and Salta.
