When The Going Gets Tough...

The Dakar Rally 2018

The Dakar Rally left its ancestral home in Africa several years ago to head for the incredible landscapes of South America. It's proved a huge hit both with people in South America and the international TV audience, who get to tune in and enjoy some of the world's best scenery.

In 2018, the big news is that Peru is back! After several years' absence, this year's race will start in the Peruvian capital, Lima, before heading south along the coast to the desert around Paracas and then on up to Arequipa. From here the riders and drivers will head up to the heights of Lake Titicaca and into Bolivia, where they'll have a rest day in La Paz.

Dakar Rally 2018 route

From here the course heads south through the fabulous landscapes of the Salar de Uyuni and down into Argentina. Here the first stop is one of our favourite cities, Salta, but then there are another 4 days of tough competition before arriving in the much-underrated city of Cordoba. There's then a final loop to the north of Cordoba before the finish line back in town on the 20th of January.

2018 Dakar Rally Holiday Packages

As usual, we will be offering special holiday packages to see this year's Dakar Rally, so please get in touch to ask about those.

And of course, there's nothing to stop you including some time enjoying the action as part of a wider holiday in South America. In Bolivia, have a look at our Salt Lake Express itinerary for a holiday including the Uyuni Salt Flats, or our Gaucho Grande holiday in Argentina to see Buenos Aires and Salta. Meanwhile, in Peru, our Southern Cross itinerary closely follows the Dakar route for the first week before taking you on to Machu Picchu...
