Detailed Itinerary

Day One – Arrival in Buenos Aires

You’ll arrive today in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and one of the world’s great cities. On arrival we’ll meet you all and take you to your hotel in the centre of town. You’ll have interconnected rooms so you can all unpack and get ready before heading out for a stroll. You’ll be having a full city tour tomorrow, but you’re just a few blocks from all the main sites, as well as from restaurants and cafes, so you’re perfectly placed to head out and start soaking up the Buenos Aires atmosphere.

Day Two – Bike Tour of Buenos Aires

This morning we’ll pick you up and take you for a guided bike tour around Buenos Aires. We will first head to the oceanfront Puerto Madero district to enjoy the panorama of Buenos Aires laid out before us, before heading along the coast and inland to the famous Caminito district in La Boca. This riverside area is famous for tango, brightly-painted houses and the Boca Juniors football team. After a short stop here in La Boca, we’ll cycle up past Boca Juniors’ impressive Bombonera stadium on our way back up to the traditional tango heartland of San Telmo. This classic Buenos Aires neighbourhood is packed with buskers, dancers, cafes and antique shops. From here we’ll head through the historic centre, including the famous Plaza de Mayo where the demonstrations by mothers of the ‘disappeared’ against the military government took place, as well as the Casa Rosada from whose balcony Evita addressed the crowds below. We’ll end up in the attractive Plaza San Martin, where your driver be waiting to take you back to your hotel. (B)

options...
  • If you don’t like the idea of cycling, or you think younger children may not be up to a full morning’s bike ride, we can do similar tours in a private car, or offer a range of shorter walking tours. We also have a lot of specialist tours concentrating on photography, art, Buenos Aires’ Jewish history, and many other subjects.

Day Three – Temaiken Bio-Park

After breakfast today we will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the amazing Temaiken Bio-Park, on the outskirts of the city. Set in 178 acres of landscaped gardens, Temaiken is an ‘open’ zoo and aquarium, where there are no cages and birds and animals roam freely in expansive enclosures. As well as large international sections, with hippos, kangaroos and white tigers (among many other species), we think the Patagonian section is especially interesting, with pumas, vicuñas, flightless rheas, pudu deer all roaming freely but easily visible. The aquarium is also easily the best in South America, and one of the best in the world, so coupled with the lush surroundings, Temaiken makes for a fantastic day out. (B)

Day Four – Travel to Puerto Madryn

This morning we’ll pick you all up and take you to the airport for a short flight south to the city of Trelew. Here we’ll meet you and take you on to the town of Puerto Madryn. This was one of the centres for the Welsh colonization of Patagonia, but today it’s the base for heading back out to sea to see some of Argentina’s rather larger inhabitants... You’ll arrive just before lunch, and then this afternoon we’ll take you by 4x4 south out of town to the Punta Loma Reserve. Here we’ll have a short walk through the Reserve, enjoying some great coastal views as we walk along the cliffs before heading down to the beaches themselves. The coast here is incredibly rich in fossils, so we will spend some time looking at the biggest and best of these before walking along a little further to get closer to the huge sea-lion colony here. After this afternoon on the coast, we’ll head back into town and drop you back at your hotel. (B)

Day Five - Sea Kayaking

Today will be a chance to try your hand at sea kayaking in the sheltered waters of the Golfo Nuevo. With experienced guides and top-quality equipment, our two-person kayaks are a great way to get out on the sea and hopefully get close to some of the area’s fantastic wildlife. Sea-lions, elephant seals and many other species are all often encountered in these rich fishing grounds. After a morning’s adventure, we will head back to dry land and take you back to your hotel. (B)

options...
  • If you’re not sure about kayaking, we could take you for a jeep tour of Peninsula Valdes to see the huge sea-bird colonies and other wildlife there? Or perhaps visit some of the traditional Welsh villages in the interior for tea and welsh-cakes?

Day Six - Whale-watching Cruise

After breakfast today, we will head down to the harbour to catch a boat out into the open ocean to enjoy the awesome sight of the huge southern right-whales in the waters just off the coast. These majestic creatures arrive here every July to mate and give birth, and stay until the end of the year before heading back into the Southern Ocean. Seeing these enormous creatures as they leap above the waves is an unforgettable experience. (B)

Day Seven - Travel to Iguazu

After breakfast this morning, we will pick you up and take you back to Trelew for your flight up to the northern tip of Argentina and the sub-tropical town of Puerto Iguazu. Here we’ll meet you and drive you across the Rio Iguazu and into Brazil, where your lovely hotel awaits. Set in large grounds, with marked trails through the forests, sports facilities and a large pool, this will be your home for the next few days and is the perfect base for visits to the nearby Iguazu Falls. (B)

Day Eight - Brazil Falls & Macuco Safari

This morning we will take you for your first visit to the incredible Iguazu Falls. Higher than Niagara Falls, and wider than Victoria Falls, Iguazu will take your breath away with its spectacular beauty and awesome power. We will visit today from the Brazilian side, where a long walkway along the canyon top allows you to appreciate the true scale of Iguazu from above. You’ll get some fantastic photos, as you work your way along to a viewpoint giving you a panoramic vista of the famous Devil’s Throat, where 14 separate falls combine in a single 350-foot drop, sending spray over 100 feet into the air for a dramatic permanent rainbow.

After enjoying these dramatic views, we will transfer to our jeeps and set off on a 3km journey through the National Park to enjoy the different species of plants and animals which thrive in this protected environment. We will then dismount and set off an a 600m walking trail which passes by the lovely Macuco Falls, and down to the banks of the Rio Iguazu. Here we will board a speedboat which takes us for a cruise upriver to the majestic Iguazu Falls themselves. Darting in and out of the spray as the enormous towers of water rise above you is an experience that’s guaranteed to stay with you forever! (B)

Day Nine - Argentina Falls

Today we will cross the border into Argentina for your second visit to Iguazu Falls, this time from the Argentinian side, where a system of walkways project right out into the middle of the waterfall system, allowing you to get close and really feel the power of the waterfalls all around you. Most people feel that this experience trumps even the amazing views of yesterday... (B)

Day Ten – Travel to Rio

After a final free morning here in Iguazu, we’ll take you to the airport for the short flight across to Brazil’s Atlantic coast and the fabulous Rio de Janeiro. On arrival we’ll meet you and take you straight to your hotel in the famous Copacabana district of the city, where you’re perfectly-placed to enjoy a stroll along the beach before heading out for something to eat. (B)

Day Eleven - Jeep Tour of Rio

After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we’ll pick you for your full day tour of Rio by open-top jeep! We’ll start by driving through Copacabana and Ipanema, on our way up to Tijuca Forest. This Atlantic Rainforest in one of the largest urban forests in the world, and travelling by jeep is the best way to spot wildlife such as parrots and monkeys. The howler monkey has only recently been reintroduced into the forest, so listen out for its distinctive call! We’ll stop at the Chinese Pagoda, which offers stunning views of Rio’s beaches and Guanabara Bay, before continuing on up Mount Corcovado. At the base of the summit we’ll have to disembark and take the stairs or lifts to the very top, where the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue proudly stands overlooking the city. The statue has become one an iconic symbol of Rio, and indeed Brazil, and the views from here are absolutely amazing. It’s the perfect spot for a family photo! We’ll then meet the jeep again and drive back down through Tijuca Forest, heading for the city centre, where we’ll stop for a traditional Brazilian lunch.

This afternoon we’ll continue our ride to Guanabara Bay, and park up at the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain. We’ll then take the hair-raising cable cars, first to Urca Hill. Here, at a vantage point of 215 meters, we’ll have beautiful views of Guanabara Bay and its islands, the Rio-Niterói Bridge, and Corcovado Mountain. A second cable car takes us the all the way to the top of Sugarloaf, from where you can enjoy another amazing view of Rio spread before you, with its hills, beaches, favelas and bays... (B/L)

Day Twelve - Last Day on Holiday in Brazil

After a final free morning to make sure you haven't missed an inch of Rio, your family holiday in South America will be coming to an end. We’ll pick you all up from your hotel to make sure your trip ends perfectly by getting to the airport with plenty of time to catch the flight home. (B)
