Foundation Celebration

Celebrating the Founding of Quito

In South America, people take their Independence and Foundation days very seriously, and so they are usually marked with public holidays and big celebrations. As the capital of Ecuador, Quito's Foundation Day celebrations are the biggest in the country.

The Fiestas de Quito actually usually last for a week, finishing on the 6th December, which is the actual foundation date. The whole city feels alive during this period, with concerts, parties, exhibitions, theatre shows and even a traditional go-cart race!

Most of the events are free, including live music from some of the biggest names in Latin music - in 2012 such luminaries as Julieta Venegas and Ruben Blades appeared - so it's a great time to be in Quito and take advantage of the city's generosity!
