Holy Week in Ayacucho

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a very big deal throughout Peru, but in the Andean town of Ayacucho they take the celebrations to entirely new levels, as they literally carpet the streets with flowers.

There are huge street processions throughout the week, with icons of saints being carried through the town across the flower 'carpets', building up to a climax on the Saturday before Easter Sunday with a massive candlelit procession accompanying an image of Jesus to the city's Cathedral, before a firework display signals the beginning of a city-wide party to celebrate the Resurrection.

Many Peruvians visit Ayacucho for Holy Week and it's a real showcase for the city, with art shows, concerts and even cookery competitions all competing for your attention. Hotels can get booked up well in advance, so if you fancy Holy Week in Ayacucho, let us know well in advance!
