La Paz, Titicaca & Tiahuanaco: 6-day holidays in Bolivia £1195pp

Not everyone knows that Bolivia is the cradle of Andean civilization, but the Tiahuanaco culture were constructing huge cities before the Incas were out of short trousers... Even short holidays in Bolivia can take you to see some of the most important archaeological sites in South America before taking you on to Lake Titicaca.

Possibly in an allusion to the role of Tiahuanaco, the Incas believed that their creator God first arose out of the waters of Titicaca - you'll get to stay overnight on the beautiful Isla del Sol to see what you think...

Detailed Itinerary

Day One – Start of your Holidays in Bolivia

Your holidays in Bolivia begin today as you arrive in La Paz, one of the most fascinating cities in South America. With its dramatic setting and a heady mix of colonial and indigenous traditions, there’s nowhere else quite like it. On arrival you are likely to feel the altitude so we will take you to your hotel so you can relax and rest up before heading out to explore the sights...

Day Two - Tour of La Paz & Moon Valley

La Paz is famous as a city of contrasts, from the modern skyscrapers of the centre, through to the faded grandeur of the colonial churches and public buildings. Today’s half-day tour will allow you to see the highlights of the city and the best of the colonial architecture, before heading out of the city to the famous Moon Valley, where centuries of erosion have created some truly other-worldly landscapes that have to be seen to be believed. (Breakfast included)

Day Three – Tour of Tiahuanaco and Suka-Kollos

This morning we will pick you up from your hotel and take you out of La Paz to the site of the cradle of Andean civilization: the ancient site of Tiahuanaco. Centuries before the Inca Empire arose to dominate the Andes (the first ruins date to around 1580BC), the Tiahuanaco culture was the strongest in the area and exhibited many of the same skills as the Incas, including huge monumental stone working, administrative centralisation and advanced agriculture. Today we will be able to see some of their remains, including the famous Gateway of the Sun, which is now one of Bolivia’s most famous national symbols, as well as visiting the excellent on-site museum. After spending most of today at the site, we will return to La Paz by way of the nearby Suka Kollos site, where we can see the ancient agricultural system of raised and systematically-flooded fields which were necessary to provide enough food for large settlements such as Tiahuanaco in the arid climate of the wider altiplano. (B/L)

Day Four - Titicaca and the Isla del Sol

After breakfast this morning we will pick you up and drive you north from La Paz to the shores of the beautiful Lake Titicaca. The highest navigable lake in the world, Titicaca is a place of unrivalled tranquility and beauty, with the deep blue waters reflecting the bright Andean sun and the snow-capped surrounding mountains. It’s no surprise that the Incas believed that the lake was the birthplace of the world. We will stop at the lakeside town of Copacabana and take a motorboat over to the stunning Isla del Sol, where we will walk up the Inca stone steps to the top of the island, where you will spend the night surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery that South America has to offer. (B/L)

Day Five - Back to La Paz

This morning we will have a short walk across the Isla del Sol before heading down the Inca steps to the harbour on the far side of the island to re-board our motor launch and head back into Bolivia proper. On arrival on the mainland we will take you back to La Paz so you can enjoy a last night here in the capital. (B/L)

Day Six - Last day of your holidays in Bolivia

Sadly all good things must come to an end, and today is the last day of your holidays in Bolivia. Depending on your international flights, you may have some free time to make sure you haven’t missed an inch of La Paz, or we may just have to pick you up after breakfast to take you to the airport in plenty of time to check in for your international flight home. Options for our Holidays in Bolivia

Madidi National Park

Madidi Jungle Adventure - from £795pp

Bolivia isn’t always known as a wildlife or jungle destination, but in fact it has sizeable tracts of both the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal wetlands within its borders, both of which are almost entirely undeveloped and are real havens for wildlife. This four-day trip flies you down from La Paz into the Amazon jungle and the protected Madidi National Park, near the border with Peru. You’ll have the chance to see some amazing wildlife and experience Bolivia as never before...

Trekking in Bolivia's Yungas Valley

Yungas Trekking - from £375pp

The trekking infrastructure isn’t quite as developed in Bolivia as it is in neighbouring Peru or Argentina, but the natural scenery is some of the most spectacular in South America, and trekking is a great way to get out there and see it all. The altitude for some of the mountain treks can be quite punishing, but this superb 3-day trek down into the sub-tropical Yungas valley is at a lower altitude than La Paz and so it can easily be combined with any of our Bolivia holidays.

We aren't tied to any particular airline, and we will be delighted to discuss all options with you, or you can even book the flights yourself if you prefer: it's totally up to you.
