Day One – Begin your holiday in Peru
We will be waiting at Lima airport to meet you as you arrive in the capital of Peru, the land of the Incas. You will be taken by private transfer to your hotel in the cosmopolitan Miraflores area. After you’ve checked in the rest of the day is yours to explore the area. There are numerous cafes and restaurants within a stone’s throw of your hotel all waiting to introduce you to Peru’s fine cuisine.
Day Two – Into the Amazon
This morning we will pick you up after breakfast and take you to the airport for your short flight over the Andes to Iquitos. On arrival we will be there to meet you and take you straight to the jetty to board our riverboat, your holiday home for the coming week. After welcoming you onboard we will sail up through the Amazon from Iquitos past small farming villages and fishing groups. You will have lunch on board our boat as you float down the river and begin to drink in the incredible spectacle that is the Amazon basin. In the evening, we will pass the juncture of the Ucayali and Maranon rivers, and head out onto the Amazon itself. We will camp by the side of the river tonight, so we can see the southern stars as they are meant to be seen... (Breakfast/Dinner/Lunch included)
Day Three – Entering the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve
You will wake up this morning by the banks of the mighty Amazon itself and we’ll waste no time here as we take you for bird watching excursion in a motorized canoe before breakfast. Egrets, Cormorants, Striated Herons, Black-Colored Hawks are common and there is always the chance to see the well named rarities like Umbrella birds and Horned Screamers. After breakfast we will take a short excursion to the small village of Solterito where you will have a chance to meet some local people for that important taste of the Real Peru. The remainder of the day is spent on board, where your jungle holiday continues as we pass Ranger Station Number One and enter the winding narrow waterways of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, where we will spend the next few days. (B/L/D)
Day Four – River Dolphins & Varzea Forest
After breakfast this morning, we will decamp and head further downriver, passing Ranger Station #2 on the Samiria River. After breakfast, we will cruise upriver to the sight of literally thousands of great Egrets flying ahead of, behind and all around the ship. Densely packed vegetation lines the river bank while clouds of butterflies rise from the shallow beaches as we quietly pass by, with Gray and Pink Amazon River Dolphins often swimming around the boat. In the afternoon we will take a short hike along an easy trail through the seasonally flooded Varzea forest. In the evening you will retire again to camp to relax and listen to the sounds of the rain forest. (B/L/D)
Day Five - Monkeys and Piranhas
Today we will move deeper into the Samiria's black waters. After breakfast, those brave enough can go swimming with the piranhas. Or if you prefer casting off you can go piranha fishing instead - it's safer, and definitely tastier! Besides red bellied Piranhas, we might catch some small Catfish, Peacock Bass or Sardines. The Reserve’s rangers are the only people living in the area we will be visiting today so we really will be in the heart of the vast variety of flora and fauna. After lunch, we will have an excursion to the long, narrow Fortuna Lake. This is a twitcher’s paradise and with a little luck we may also encounter Saki monkeys, a unique primate that frequents these seasonally flooded forests. Higher in the canopy, Capuchin Monkeys may be seen in small family groups feeding on leaves. Lined with tall trees, trailing lianas and floating meadows, the beauty of this area is hard to beat. (B/L/D)
Day Six - Hiking in Nauta Cano
An early wake up call today as we set out to explore Nauta Cano. The hike takes us past a series of small waterfalls and down the steep slopes along which forest streams flow. As we trek along below the high canopy in this section of the forest we can see countless varieties of plants, butterflies, birds and other small animals and our experienced guides will be on hand to give you the low down on all of them. We'll also keep an eye out for Paddington bear! Later in the day, you stop at the small village of San Miguel to stock up on fresh provisions. (B/L/D)
Day Seven – Back to Iquitos
Turning back onto the Amazon itself, we will pass the small village of Tamshicayu and head into Iquitos. We should arrive in the middle of the afternoon, following lunch served on board. We will take you to your hotel for some well-earned rest! (B/L)
Day Eight – Return to Lima
Iquitos really is like no other place, you can only reach it by air or river and as a result it has a unique character which is pretty special. Bearing that in mind we'll leave you with a free day today to take in the bustle of city life right in the jungle. Then, in the evening we'll pick you up to take you for a flight back over the Andes to Lima for you to enjoy your last night in Peru! (B)
Day Nine – Last Day on Holiday in Peru
We have left the last day of your holiday in Peru free to make sure we can accommodate any international flight time and get you to the airport in plenty of time for your journey home. If you don’t depart until the evening we can organise some extra sightseeing for you and we always make sure you keep your hotel room until you leave for the airport so you can leave your packing until the very last minute if you so desire!
